A fairytale candy oasis best describes the work of Australian artist Tanya Schultz. Her elaborate installations form a sugar filled dreamscape perfect for the time of year when leaves fall and things get festive. The wonderland she portrays evokes a sweet utopia where rainbows grow on trees and things are made of gum drops and lollipops. There is a metamorphosis which decomposes the shallow world of treats into a winter playland where everything is fresh and new. The prevailing feeling one gets when entering her world is of optimism and childlike wonder. Whereas Felix Gonzales Torres used sweets to comment on excess and decadence, Schultz uses it to reach for the stars and inspires us to follow our dreams. Her very idealistic narratives are interpreted through generous use of color and sugar cubed shapes which make you hungry and happy at the same time. Schultz’ work gives new meaning to the term “sugar rush” which in this case is more of a spiritual pick me up than a physical one.
