A fine night to visit the Spring/Break artfair in the old post office on west 31st street in manhattan. Thick wet snowflakes fell but that didn’t stop the masses from coming out. The fair consisting of 90 curators and 400 artists definitely had an edge. It felt exciting and the art was pretty good. Everything from moving installations to carved wooden neon signs by brent owens felt like you were at a happening. I liked the fact that there was mold on the ceiling and you didn’t know what to expect as you roamed from room to room. It had the feel of an mfa open studio except the art was consistently good. Some rooms were raw and unfinished while others were meticulously made over and prepared. There were artists that I remember seeing their first solo show ten years ago and artists I’ve never heard of. Some of the more significant rooms came from ak art, eve sussman, kari adelaide and gift shop. There was nothing “really beautiful” which was a sign of the times. Good art today has a punk rock edge and revels in sentiment rather than aesthetic. Spring/break definitely made a statement.
