Craig Damrauer is perhaps best known as the creator of “New Math”, an art/literary/sci project where he used words in mathematical equations to come up with answers about life. For over five years Damrauer added a new math equation weekly to the site, which reflected what he was thinking about at the time. It garnered much attention from various sources, including publishing houses and at some point, even artist Ed Ruscha got involved. More recently, Damrauer presented a piece with AK Art at the Spring Break Art Fair last March called “All the Japanese Words in John Hersey’s Hiroshima”. This piece consisted of only the Japanese words and translations from Hersey’s essay for The New Yorker Magazine in 1946 after the bomb was dropped. Damrauer left the words exactly where they would’ve appeared on the page and it gives a chilling and poetic first hand account of those who were there. For the Spring Break exhibit Damrauer broke up the words into 17 pages and pinned them to the wall. The pins were made in a factory that was destroyed during the bombing of Hiroshima, but has since been restored and is now fully operational.
