“The Scenic Route”
Dec 5-8, 2019
Pulse Miami, Booth 314
artists: Deborah Druick, Yikui Gu, Zoia Skorodapenko, Diana Wege
curated by: Stephanie Young
Vellum Projects is pleased to present “The Scenic Route” at Pulse Miami Dec 5-8th. The title is taken from a work in Yikui Gu’s classic yellow series using the artist’s interracial marriage as a jumping off point to create mixed-media commentary sprinkled with popular culture and socio-political satire. In contrast Zoia Skoropadenko’s meditative (intellectual) landscapes sketched on trains then further realized in the studio, capture the artist’s journeys that reflect on her excitement and anticipation encapsulating memory, contemplation and illusion. Cutting in are Deborah Druick’s graphically inspired paintings. Focused on the objectification of women and emphasis put on femininity and beauty, the artist conjures subtle and clever feminism through gesture and placement. Moving on are prints and drawings by enviro-conceptual artist Diana Wege whose stance on conflict resolution and climate change become slogans and symbols that simultaneously engage and disturb.

Held annually in a big city with a small-town feel Art Toronto is the largest contemporary art fair in Canada. Showcasing galleries from all the provinces and perhaps the largest representation of Inuit art in the world, it combines new and old on a balanced scale. Representing one of three spaces from the New York area Vellum Projects presented “Zion Gazing” which explored a discourse between man, animal and the environment. Vellum is a magazine which focuses on emerging artists from all over the world the majority currently working in New York City. The projects area of the mag is the curatorial vision of publisher Stephanie Young, who features many of these artists. Here in Toronto the exhibition presented Marcy Brafman, Jennifer Deppe Parker and Diana Wege, all who have appeared in the mag. Zion showcased Diana Wege’s “Nine Lives” piece from 1993. Created as a grid with nine drawings on handmade paper each identical, yet randomly tainted with sketches, origami, writings and other paraphernalia. The work’s title references the popular saying which is even more prevalent today than twenty five years ago when it was first created, a quiet cry for our planet’s survival. Both Deppe Parker and Brafman find meaning and metaphor through the creatures that roam the earth. Using recycled magazine paper in collage format Deppe Parker alludes to her subject’s perspective through their eyes while Brafman searches for similarities in animal and human behavior. The special curatorial section sponsored by Rbc featured work by Rajni Perera a Sri Lankan artist currently living in Toronto who uses portraiture and figure to meditate on symbiosis and transformation. The booth was nicely curated by Aiden Gillis of Art Gallery Nova Scotia. Other gems included an original Calder gouache drawing which burst from its frame in bold Calder color bringing to mind a circus wave and Caroline Larsen, whose thickly painted semi-abstracted landscape created an intriguing optical illusion of needlepoint. The fair created an atmosphere of positive energy which was kept at a nice steady pace throughout its four day run neither overwhelming the visitor or participant.

Vellum Magazine is pleased to present at Art Fair Tokyo. We will feature new paper work by Jennifer Deppe Parker and new ink and paint marker drawings from Marcy Brafman. In her latest series, Parker collages clips of painted over magazines to form abstracted versions of different eyes. For AFT she has created the eyes of several different animals found only in Japan. These include the Koi, a popular water garden fish, Inu a popular dog and the Scops owl. Her work examines how one views the obvious and what we discover when prompted to use our intuition. On the other hand, Brafman finds fuel from the popular cultural icons of yesteryear. Inspired by the old cartoonist George McManus who penned “Bringing up Father” and “Maggie & Jiggs”, her new drawings on vellum, tagged “The War Between Men and Women” harbors gestural fluidity to depict this age old conflict. Her trio of matrimonial satire will be shown individually on each day of the fair akin to a daily comic strip. Both artists have appeared in Vellum magazine and are representative of the kind of work we love and support. Copies of the latest issue and select back issues will also be on hand.

We’re very pleased to present Vellum 21 which features Natalie Collette Wood on the cover. Wood is a multidisciplinary artist who blurs the line between memory and reality. Through painting, sculpture and collage she draws from personal experience to create dynamic landscapes detailing time suspended in a half awoken dream. Her sculptural pieces combine elements of nature and man-made materials to question what is real and what is fantasy. Temp on Mars our curatorial project for Vellum 21 focuses on seven artists who create fantastical narratives using earthly quotas of fauna and flora. We’ve also reviewed some of the fairs we’ve participated in recently. The issue will have its paper debut at Artissima, Italy Nov 1-4, booth D in the Publisher’s area at Oval Lingotto.

Vellum Projects is pleased to present “Breaking the Code” at this year’s Code Art Fair. The meaning of code constitutes a system of words, letters, figures or other symbols usually reserved for the purpose of secrecy. Here visual clues of personal experience are heightened by questions of intention and used with non-traditional forms to challenge our notion of perception, espionage, architecture and intimacy. The show is comprised of artists who have appeared in Vellum Magazine and are part of our on-going programming. Vellum’s latest issue and select back issues from our catalog will also be available to view/purchase in our booth (1F).
The fair takes place Aug 30th-Sept 2nd at the Bella Center in Copenhagen, Denmark.
