Using unconventional materials such as wool, foam, clay and resin, Caroline Wells Chandler makes objects which are humorous and playful. Focusing mostly on the figure in her crocheted pieces Wells Chandler explores life’s most basic occurrences with simple gestures and color. In her simplicity is found a universal narrative which gives identity to her work and allows it to breathe on a more aesthetic level. The medium of sewing has risen in recent years to include artists who take it one step above craft and show the skill and finesse involved in using a needle and thread. In an older series, Wells Chandler uses foam, clay and resin to make claymation variations of the moon. These exude childlike characteristics, but with an artistic hand using different colors to create three dimensional balls of lunar fire. She also took the round shape and made cookie selfies which included chocolate chip and oatmeal. These created unique personalities which focus on moments we all experience and identify with. The fact that the artist used a cookie to demonstrate specific feelings is another testament to her love of humor. Her work displays qualities which find meaning in creative spontaneity.
